BESI at a glance

The Origins of W2E®: BESI’s TurnW2E® System Leads the Way

Since the early 2000s, W2E® has been more than an acronym coined by the team at BESI. Short for Waste-to-Energy, it is a widely recognized expression of innovation, sustainability, and a direct description of BESI’s foundational technology and the discipline it helped shape.

Beginning in the mid-2000s, applied-research pilots and field demonstrations of the TurnW2E® gasification platform established W2E® as a rigorously proven pathway for converting diverse waste streams, including wood, plastics, sewage sludge, biomass, oils, and municipal solid waste, into clean synthesis gas for heat, power, fuels, and microgrid integration. Through the 2010s, the platform was refined and scaled, tying the term W2E® to real performance.

That foundation now points the way forward. Building on validated results, BESI is advancing solutions that extend W2E® into strategic areas:

  • Critical metals supply (next phase): intelligent recovery pathways that help secure essential inputs for domestic manufacturing and energy systems.
  • Waste plastics-to-power for logistics: converting plastic waste into energy that supports EV charging and resilient depot operations.
  • Hydrogen from waste: producing hydrogen with novel storage approaches designed for tactical mobility and distributed infrastructure.
  • Additional benefits: reduced landfill dependence, lower lifecycle emissions, and modular, right-sized utilities that integrate with modern microgrids and new data center needs.

Equally important is the future workforce. Through BESI’s workforce development initiatives, we’re preparing technicians and engineers to operate cutting-edge, deployable utilities. Included in the various advantages and capabilities of these programs are the support of warfighters and the strengthening of national energy security.

At BESI, our past informs our future. The same applied-research discipline that defined W2E® in 2007–2008 continues to guide BESI’s roadmap today; toward recovering critical materials, powering electrified logistics, unlocking hydrogen from waste, and enabling partners across defense, industrial, and municipal markets. For organizations exploring resilient, low-carbon utilities, W2E® is the proven starting point, and the platform BESI will keep evolving with new partners in targeted sectors.

    Reason for Inquiry?*

BESI was founded by a woman owner to develop gasification technology into military and commercial solutions

In the intervening years, we have pioneered numerous concepts in gasification integration and use. The work at BESI has focused primarily on technology development and proving innovation through full scale demonstration and evaluation, with the US DoD providing funded projects to direct technology efforts. Commercial projects have been supported by BESI in an engineering and process design role, tailoring the proprietary technology for each client.
